HIBS specializes in HIGH quality products for those that love the INTENSITY of the sport.

The HIBS Name

HIBS began as the Haverhill Inn & Bicycle Shop where the owners, Tom & Noreen Bourassa wore hats as both Inn-keepers and Bike Shop owners. They did so because the found that they were located on Adventure Cycling's Transcontinental Northern Tier Bicycle Route across the USA as well as being located on Vermont's Green Mountain Bicycle Loop.

Tom & Noreen Bourassa - Shop Owners

After wearing both hats for over 2 years, it became evident that the growth of the bike shop had meant the closure of the inn. Tom & Noreen found that they needed a somewhat separate area for the shipping and the receiving of the product as well as a place to prepare and price the product. They also found that due to their growth, they needed more office space. So they closed the Inn and took some of the Inn's lodging rooms for bike shop use.

So, after two successful years of the Haverhill Inn & Bicycle Shop's acronym of HIBS, they decided to rename their business High Intensity Bike Shop. A fitting name given that Tom Bourassa, in his teenage years competed as a Pro BMXer, and later in Pro Downhill, Pro Slalom, Expert Cross Country and Road Racing events as well.

Tom's Cycling & Occupational Background

Tom's occupational background as an auto and truck technician (with an ASE Certification in Braking Systems) has given him an extensive mechanical aptitude and knowledge base of mechanics. That coupled with his cycling passion, Pro cycling experience and knowledge of bicycle products has enabled HIBS to find it's place in high-end bicycle sales and service.

While some bike shops merely shake their head due to unfamiliarity with big travel bikes, it is these bikes that Tom seems most comfortable with because of his experience both on and off the big-bike saddle. That doesn't mean that he is unfamiliar with road bikes or XC bikes, he is comfortable with them too. It just means that because of this big-bike experience and passion, he has found that free-riders and down-hillers have begun gravitating towards HIBS.

The Atmosphere at HIBS

HIBS is one of those bike shops you would want to visit. We are nestled in the Valley beneath both New Hampshire's White Mountains and Vermont's Green Mountains. We are not a big-city bike shop where it feels like you have entered a department store. We are.... Just The Opposite!

We are a specialty shop located in a beautiful New England Village. A village where a great majority of the homes have big New England barns attached. A village where mom and dad can ride along with their child on the town's sidewalk while the youngster rides along hoping to one day lose his training wheels. A village located at the crossroad of two National Scenic Byways, the Kancamagus Highway (Route 112) and the Connecticut River Byway (Route 5 & 10).

Entrance to the Bike Shop

HIBS is a Year-Round Specialty Shop

HIBS is a year-round bike shop. While some bike shops close for the entire winter, HIBS does not (they do generally close for the month of January however). Some bike shops cease riding and put away their bikes for the winter. Some shops switch focus and begin displaying skis, boards, skates and treadmills instead of bikes. HIBS does not believe in doing this. We are a bike shop - as our business name suggests - so we believe in staying focused upon bikes .... throughout the winter.

Instead of hitting the slopes with our skis and boards, we hit the snowmobile trails with our Pugsleys or studded snow tires. We've found winter riding is phenomenal. Though it requires effort, there are times when the ground is so frozen that it's so fast. Riding during winter can be so much faster and enjoyable than riding any other time of the year .... believe it or not. For some participants, it's winter riding that they enjoy the most. When the ground is frozen with an inch of crusty snow on the ground, it is then that one can explore into areas that they would not otherwise be able to ride. The underbrush and foliage are gone.

To conclude, here at HIBS, we believe that cycling shouldn't simply be a good weather sport, but a year round sport. We truly embrace this sport we love and participate in it year round. People snowshoe and cross country ski into the woods. Why not ride? Well, we do! So, if it's a bike you want, get it from HIBS - a shop that really knows and embraces the sport of cycling - year round!
